Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen Launch Shoes, and Other News From The Row’s Pre-Fall Presentation
Lots of news coming out of this morning’s Pre-Fall appointment at The Row. One: Designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are launching a full-fledged shoe collection. Like the one-offs they’ve shown in the past, the new shoes are mostly flats: velvet Mary Janes, leather slip-ons, bow-top satin skimmer sandals. The stars of the lineup are a pair of white crocodile-skin ankle boots and mules with low, mother-of-pearl-type heels. (The gemlike material turns up on the straps of the Mary Janes, as well.)
Two: The brand’s first New York store is finally set to open this May, with the collection that was presented today. It’s no surprise, then, that the bag collection is bigger than ever. Notable new additions include a deconstructed hobo, a soft satin evening pouch, and leather styles hand-painted with the phrase, “The Row for me.” Shoppers will be able to personalize them with their own initials at the new shop. We can also report that the label’s Fall show will be held here in New York, not, as was the case for Spring, outside Paris.
As for the Pre-Fall collection itself, it was, as is The Row way, very much an evolution of previous seasons. Fabrics like silk cloques, fine- and heavy- gauge cashmeres, and finely sheared furs—and, as Ashley put it, “how they feel on the body”—took center stage. Layering, oversize volumes, and exaggerated lengths were some of the seasonal messages. Pointing to the folds on the sleeve of a generously proportioned coat, Ashley said the clothes were inspired by Renaissance paintings. It was an apt allusion, but it doesn’t really do justice to the luxurious feel of the clothes. The Olsens will release photos of the complete collection in April.
